EXORCIST III (1990, Blatty)
If you haven’ seen it, enjoy; in short form, the nurse station scene still works brilliantly. And if you have seen it already, maybe you’ve forgotten just enough. I’ve been startled by this more than once.
David Lean always said, in reference to the famous arrival scene of Omar Sharif in Lawrence of Arabia, you have to bore the audience before you can surprise them.
Enjoy this case in point:

John,
Joe turned me on to your blog. Well, done. Looking forward to enjoying this more.
A favorite oner we talk about is the scene in Catch Me If You Can where Leo tries to escape from the hospital. Natural, great economy, in camera “cuts”. The whole works. Least favorite Spielberg oner is the dog tag scene in Pvt Ryan. Just like actors can get caught acting, directors can get caught directing!
Cheers and happy blogging!

Thanks, Jeremy. That’s funny – Joe and I were just talking about that same shot from CMIYC! Yes, I’ll have to include that. I don’t remember that shot from RYAN, I’ll check it out. That’s excellent way to put it, being caught directing, like an actor caught being actor-y. Thanks again for the support.

I guess my question would be, why do some directors love shots that sit so long?

Rock the casbah, rock the casbah, Omar Sharif don’t like it (thinks it’s not kosher)!

LOVE THIS SCENE!!! Not sure if I actually really like this movie because it’s good or because my brother took me to see it before he left for the Marines… one of his few acts of kindness up to that point. Anyway, I think this movie (and the story) are highly underrated. The true sequel to The Exorcist. Brad Dourif has a pretty good performance being stuck in a strait jacket for the entire movie.
